Walter Presents acquires Quebecois drama True North for the US.

The production houses Encore Télévision and Sovimage have announced that the series True North (Les pays d’en haut) was acquired by Walter Presents. Beginning in January 2021, the first season will be available in the United States in its original version with English subtitles via PBS Masterpiece, Comcast Xfinity X1 and Roku.

Scripted by Gilles Desjardins the series is based on the Quebecois novel Un Homme et son péché by Claude-Henri Grignon. The series stars Vincent Leclerc, Sarah-Jeanne Labrosse and Maxime Le Flaguais and is coproduced by François Rozon (Encore Télévision) and Sophie Deschênes (Les Productions Sovimage inc.). The show’s five seasons were presented on ICI Radio-Canada TÉLÉ from January 2016 to March 2020. With a weekly average market share of 34%, and 1,272,000 viewers, True North received numerous awards and distinctions, including 11 Gémeaux (34 nominations) and 2 Prix Artis (9 nominations).

Set on the verge of the 20th century, True North explores the turbulent period of the settlement and development of the northern regions of Canada, where colonisation of the Quebecois ‘Wild West’ wreaks havoc and an array of colourful characters try and make their mark.

Any news on any potential UK release when we have it.

    1. I know Walter Presents has picked up all 5 seasons that are available so far. I’d imagine they’ll release a new one every 3 or 4 months based on how they’ve tended to release other shows in the US (Seaside Hotel springs to mind) with multiple seasons available already.

    1. No dates confirmed but I’d expect a new season to be added to Walter Presents – on the PBS Masterpiece channel – every 2-4 months. I know Walter Presents has definitely picked up the first 5 seasons.
